When children with critical illnesses meet their favorite athletes, they see the impossible as possible. They are inspired to feel stronger and more confident, because those they deeply admire bring them hope and encouragement at a time when they need it most. Beginning Sunday, July 14th @espn will air its multi-day “My Wish” series on SportsCenter which takes viewers on an in-depth journey into the lives of children with critical illnesses whose wishes to meet their favorite sports heroes were granted by Make-A-Wish. This will be the 17th year that the series will be hosted by Emmy Award-winning reporter Chris Connelly. Connelly brings these stories to life through insightful and compelling interviews with the wish kids and their families. This year’s WishMakers include the San Francisco 49ers, Los Angeles Dodgers first baseman Freddie Freeman, gold medal swimmer Katie Ledecky, the Duke University basketball team, and Miami Dolphins quarterback Tua Tagovailoa. Make-A-Wish extends its thanks to Disney and ESPN for their support of the “My Wish” series as part of The Walt Disney Company’s commitment to delivering joy and comfort to children with critical illnesses and their families. Beyond assisting with this year’s series, Disney – which owns ESPN – has been a steadfast friend of Make-A-Wish for 44 years and has helped the organization grant more than 155,000 Disney-related wishes, including the very first official wish. We are on a quest to bring every eligible child’s wish to life, because wishes are an important part of a child’s treatment journey. Wishes can help children feel better and give them the hope and strength they need to fight – and even overcome – a critical illness. It’s why health professionals use a wish as part of their treatment plan. When children are battling a critical illness, so much of normal childhood is taken away from them — it is exhausting, both emotionally and physically. A wish is something that gives kids the opportunity to look outside their illness — it restores a sense of childhood back to the child and normalcy back to the family. Research shows, and physicians agree, wishes can help improve a child's quality of life and produce better health outcomes.

For more than 40 years, Disney has been providing magic to wish kids and their families when they need it most. In fact, Disneyland was part of the first wish ever granted by Make-A-Wish. Since 1980, Disney has helped Make-A-Wish grant more than 140,000 wishes around the world. Every part of The Walt Disney Company helps Make-A-Wish grant life-changing wishes: from the theme parks around the world, to Disney stores, to the television and movie studios, here are some of our stories.
