In this video, we will show you a top 10 list of the best detective movies ever made. Ever since movies first became a thing during the early 20th century, one genre which has remained consistently popular has been the detective story. Of course, it should come as little surprise this is the case because detective stories serve up a pretty damn near perfect framework for a movie in that they give us a mystery to solve, a world to get lost in, and usually a morally grey character to try and figure out the motives of.
It certainly worked for Alfred Hitchcock when he made Vertigo in 1958, and it worked just as well for Roman Polanski when he directed Chinatown in 1973, as each of these movies were smash hits with audiences at the time. In fact, even to this day both are considered cinematic classics and films that any fan should see at some point during their lifetime as they each show what the genre can do when it’s at its best and being handled by a master of the craft.
And it’s not just prior eras of Hollywood which have given us great detective movies either. No, the modern day has also created its fair share of brilliant ones too. In fact in the nineties alone we were all treated to not just the cat and mouse game of Heat and the black comedy of Fargo, but also the throwback noir of L.A. Confidential, the dark heart of The Silence of the Lambs, and the gritty horror of Se7en.
