The Polaris Mine is a massive abandoned mine with multiple levels, miles of drift tunnels, endless miners’ graffiti, and lots of impressive mining equipment left behind. It’s an explorer’s dream! Here in Part 2, we immediately found an old drill in spectacular condition that looked as if the last miner who was operating it simply turned it off while drilling a rock bolt and walked away. After a 150 foot ladder climb to an extensive upper level, we found a lot more miners’ graffiti from the 1910s and 1920s depicting themselves, their names, naked women, animals, and other things. We found more ore carts and an already unstable area of the mine that was seriously damaged further by a major 6.1 earthquake at the turn of the 20th century. The damaged part of the mine was still worked after the earthquake despite the heavy timbering throughout that section having been dangerously skewed to the left by the strong seismic forces (no safety regulations back then like there are today). We climbed a 200 foot ladder to another extensive level where we found even more dazzling miners’ graffiti! Further on, we found an area of the mine where the copper was literally leaching out of the walls and floor causing everything to be a stunning shade of turquoise-blue. It was amazing! The mines in this playlist are simply downright scary and hair-raising for various reasons. They are the stuff of nightmares.
Exploring abandoned talc mines is considerably more dangerous than exploring hard-rock mines because talc is very soft and prone to collapse. This playlist features some of the more crumbling, collapsing talc mines I've explored.
Abandoned mines that are flooded present an extra danger to explorers that isn't present in dry mines. This playlist highlights the flooded mines I've explored.
Paul and I made several repeat trips to the Wicked Wash Mine in order to explore its five levels. The mine is accessed via a rubble-filled inclined shaft that was partially clogged with collapse and debris at one point. Highlights of our exploration of this century-plus old mine include lots of artifacts and a H&R revolver from the 1920s!
Boy, was I ever surprised when I reached the abandoned Loomis Mine! Initially dug in 1881 and only worked for silver until about 1895 or so, this abandoned mine turned out to be quite extensive with many levels. More videos of this fantastic mine will be added to this playlist soon!
There's something here for everyone -- tunnels to nowhere, secret waterfalls, shoe trees, UFOs, covered bridges, and more! Have fun!
