Mahamrityunjaya Mantra The great death-conquering mantra, also known as Tryambakam Mantra, is a verse from the Rigveda . It is attributed to Triambaka Trinetra wala, the epithet of Rudra (later associated with Shiva). This verse also appears in Yajurveda. Along with the Gayatri Mantra it is the most widely known mantra of contemporary Hinduism. The great mantra dedicated to Shiva as Mrityunjaya is found in the Rigveda. It is called the Maha Mrityunjaya Mantra that conquers death. This mantra has many names and forms.
  • It is called the Rudra Mantra, referring to the fiery aspect of Shiva;
Tryambakam mantra and sometimes referred to as the Mrita-Sanjeevani mantra, referring to the three eyes of ShivaIt is known because it is a component of the "life-restoring" lore given to the ancient sage Shukra after he had completed austere penance.

Original form: Om Trimbakam Yajamahe Sugandhi Pushtivardhanam. उर्वारुकमिव बधननांमृत्योरमुक्षिया मृमृतत् ॥ Literal meaning of Maha Mrityunjaya Mantra - Tryambakam: Three-eyed (inflected) Yajamahe: We worship, we revere, our revered. सुगधिम: sweet-smelling, fragrant (accusative) पुस्ति: a well-nourished condition, flourishing, fullness of prosperous life. Vardhanam: One who nourishes, gives strength, enhancer (in health, wealth, happiness); One who gives joy, pleasure and health, A good gardener. Urvarukam: Cucumber (accusative). Eve: Like, like this. Bandhana: Stem (of gourd); ("From the stem" the fifth declension - is actually longer than the ending -d which changes to na/anusvara through sandhi). Mrityur: From death. Mukshiya: Set us free, give us freedom. Mother: No. Amritat: Immortality, Moksha Simple translation - We contemplate the Tri-Eye reality that nourishes and increases the sweet fullness of life.
