This tutorial will show you how to make a bead embroidered headband using small beads, pearls and rhinestone chain. This video does go through some bead embroidery basics but if this is your first time, watch the video carefully. It may be complicated at first but you can definitely do it! For this tutorial you will need: Nymo Beading Thread Beading Embroidery Needle Stiff Felt Rhinestone Chain E6000 glue 11/0 clear round crystal seed beads 11/0 opaque white pearl seed beads 11/0 hex cut seed beads half cut pearls Ribbon Cloth for backing

Measure a length of felt that you want for your headband and cut it. This one is about 8 inches by 3 inches. You will trim the width later, so don't worry about making it too wide. Use the E6000 to draw a rounded zigzag pattern down the middle of the felt. Make it as uniform or organic as you want. Place the rhinestone chain flat-side-down onto the glue and trim off the excess. Make sure the entirety of the chain is glued down well. This will be your focal point and what you bead around later in the tutorial. Next, you will place a dot of glue in each valley of the rhinestone zigzag and place the half-pearls on the glue. Make sure the distance between each of the pearls and the chain is the same because you will fill that space with rows of beads. Allow the glue to dry for approximately 15 minutes. With a threaded beading needle, you are going to come up from the back right next to the rhinestone chain and leave a tail. Thread 3 of the opaque white pearls and place up against the chain. You are going to push your needly to the back side again through the felt at the end of the pearls. Flip your piece of felt over and tie the tail you left with the remaining thread together into a not. Trim the excess from the tail. Thread back through the center of the beads and then go through the center of the remaining beads. In this care, go back up between beads 2 & 3, then thread your needle through bead 3. You will continue to embroider along the rhinestone chain. I recommend using between 2 - 8 beads at a time, otherwise it may be unstable. I used 6 beads, stitched down and then came up between beads 3 & 4, then threaded through beads 4 - 6. Once you are finished embroidering both sides of the rhinestone chain, you need to thread back through some of yur stitching until you are next to one of the flat-back pearls. You are going to use the clear round beads to bead embroider an outline around the pearl. I recommend 4 beads at a time, but only do what you are comfortable with. Next you will use the hex cut beads to make a starburst pattern around the outline we just made. Use only 1 hex bead at a time. You will need to go back through some of the stitching you have already done adn do the same thing to all of the pearls. Next, you need to CAREFULLY cut out your design. Leave only a beads width of felt on the edges so that when you do the final row of beads it will not show from underneath. Be careful to not damage any stitching or cut your thread and needle off. You will have to go back and finish any damage. With the round crystal beads, bead embroider one row along the edge you cut all the way around the design. Cut ribbon to any length you desire. Make sure it is long enough for your purpose (head, waist, whatever). Place your design face-down and make one straight horizontal line across the middle, then placing the ribbon face down onto the glue. Allow this to dry for a few minutes before continuing. For your backing, find a fabric that will not fray on the edges. Put a layer of E6000 on the back of your piece and the ribbon. Make sure the side of the fabric that you want to have showing is face up when you lay it into the glue. Allow this to dry for 30 minutes to an hour. After drying, cut the excess backing away along the edge of the piece. If you used a woven material that will fray, you need to apply a sealant (clear nail polish or no-fray glue).
