The ouroboros (the tail-devourer) depicts a snake or dragon eating its tail. It is thought to be the oldest allegorical symbol in alchemy, and symbolises the concept of eternity and endless return. It is associated with the maxim "Hen to Pān" (One is All). In its midst, lies the All-seeing eye.

When we are faced against a wall, and all seems lost, it is not unusual to have an encounter with the Self. This is symbolically represented in the biblical motif of Jacob wrestling with the angel, and while he dislocated his hip, his struggle prevented a murder. That is how one grows: by being defeated decisively by greater beings. He becomes reborn, receiving the new name, Israel ("he who wrestles with God").

The lapis philosophorum (philosophers' stone) is an alchemical symbol of the Self. The outer circle represents wholeness. The triangle is body, soul and spirit. The square is the four elements. When these are put together, we get once again the circle of totality. This process can be repeated ad infinitum.
