This video is best enjoyed in a VR headset, such as Google Cardboard or Oculus Rift. Are you curious about how VR works? We made a 3-part series about the STEM of VR, explaining the Science of VR, the Math of VR, and now the Technology of VR. By Technology, we mean - how do gadgets like VR Headsets work to create Virtual Reality? In this video, we explain the history of this technology - the story starts earlier than you might think. Have you ever seen a stereoscope, which allows you to view 3D images? They date back to the 1800s! You may have played with a Viewmaster, which is a more recent version of the stereoscope. Then we discuss modern-day efforts to make Virtual Reality part of your world, including the Oculus Rift. There are technical issues to address in VR, including camera design, computers to manipulate the footage, transmission of the video so it’s smooth (not choppy or disorienting), and then finally, watching the video in a special headset. This is a VR180 video, which means you can look all around a hemisphere, and it is in 3D! We recommend watching this video while wearing a VR headset for the full 3D immersive experience. But if you don’t have a VR headset like Oculus or Google Cardboard, that’s okay. You can still swipe your finger around on your phone to explore the hemispherical 180 degree view.
