Sometimes a little snare drum ringing in the drum mix is nice. But if your snare drum is ringing too much, you need to dampen it for sure. Nothing will ruin a snare drum sound more than a weird tone coming off of it in the form of a ring. Disclaimer: I'm actually a big fan of snare drum ring when it's appropriate.
