I've caulked quite a lot of skirting boards in my time as I've gradually renovated the two properties I've lived in. I've always found it a bit of a long winded process - first smoothing the bead of caulk with my finger and then tooling it with a decorators filling knife to remove the unsightly residue. But yesterday before I caulked the new skirting boards I've just installed in our spare room, I thought, why not use the FUGI silicone profiling tool I recently used on my Pro Silicone Guide video    • How to Apply Silicone - the COMPLETE ...  . There's a particular tool in the kit I bought https://geni.us/C580d (Amazon) that has a right angle profile - designed I reckon primarily to enable you to completely remove a silicone bead that you've wrongly applied. So I thought I'd give it a go, and here's how I got on! Note, if your skirting / base boards are wood or MDF, you might try using the angled profile rather than the right angle, as this will give you a thicker bead that will resist cracking if the boards move after installation.
